Congratulations to both Drachen Furie and Dirty Water Dragons! Both teams put in strong performances in DBCB's first dragon boat race of the 2010 season. Drachen Furie finished 2nd out of 37 teams, and Dirty Water Dragons finished 8th overall. I'm really proud of the way that both teams stayed focused, improved after each successive race, and performed consistently well. The hard work that everyone put in during each practice really showed this weekend. Here's a quick summary of our race results:

Saturday's time trials consisted of two 500m heats with three teams competing in each heat. Drachen Furie started off the morning in the first heat and turned in times of 2:29.96 and 2:30.64. Dirty Water Dragons followed a few heats later with times of 2:42.84 and 2:43.31. Using average times from both time trial heats, Drachen Furie lead the way with the top average time, and Dirty Water Dragons followed with an 8th place average time.

Both teams started off Sunday morning racing in Group 1 with the top teams in the festival. Drachen Furie advanced on Sunday to the Division A Major finals, where they raced against Vitasoy MAD and Space Dragons. Vitasoy MAD pulled out from the start strong and never looked back, leaving Space Dragons and Drachen Furie battling for 2nd place. Drachen Furie put together their best race of the day to come out ahead by a very slim margin. Final standings in the Division A Major finals was Vitasoy MAD in first (2:22.931), Drachen Furie in second (2:31.153), and Space Dragons in third (2:31.915).

Dirty Water Dragons advanced to the Division B Major fianls, where they faced Living Root Red and the Arizona Gila Dragons. This final had a photo finish with Dirty Water Dragons being narrowly edged out by the Arizona Gila Dragons. Final standings in this Division B Major finals was Arizona Gila Dragons in first (2:41.724), Dirty Water Dragons in second (2:42.300), and Living Root Red in third (2:49.493).

Congratulations again to both teams on their performances, and I hope that everyone had a great time. For Jim Wallace, Melanie, Phil Woo, and Samantha who joined us for the first time as paddlers, I hope that your racing experience was good and that you’re excited for the rest of the season.
