What should I wear to a practice?

  • Always dress warmly and in layers so you can take off what you don't need
  • If you have a choice wear non-cotton clothing. When cotton gets wet it does not keep you warm.
  • Dragon boating is a water sport and we usually get wet. Keep that in mind with clothing choices
  • Bring a change of clothes and keep it in the storage locker

When are practices canceled?

  • Air Temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Air temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and raining (yes snow counts)
  • White Caps: This is a condition of high wind. The coach or the steerer usually makes the call on the dock
  • Lightning: water + electricity = bad. The storms are usually short so most of the time this does not cancel a practice
  • Any other time the coach or steerer think there are unsafe conditions
  • Call 617-517-0727 to check if the practice is canceled.

Should I get my own paddle & lifejacket?

This is completely up to personal preference. The club provides life jackets and paddles, but if you buy your own it will probably be more comfortable and fit you better. Unfortunately, you cannot always use your equipment at races. Most of the local races do not allow you to use your own equipment.

Other than clothes, what do I normally need to paddle?

You need to bring water and sunscreen! They are probably the two most important things to bring. Being burned or dehydrated ends your fun quickly. You also probably want to bring some granola bars or snacks for some quick food, a towel is another nice thing to have for drying off or changing afterwards.

How do we get to races?

When we go to out of town races that are within a reasonable drive the club will arrange carpools. The person organizing the race or someone they have asked will coordinate rides. People in the car share the expense of gas and tolls. Sometimes a few people will rent a car or a van and they will share the cost amongst themselves. For races that are too far away to drive, we try to coordinate as much as we can to save on expenses.
