How much do the practices cost?

All practices are included for members.  Any non-members attending a DBCB practice get their first practice free, and any subsequent practices cost $10.

What should I wear to practice?

  • Shirt
    • If you have a choice wear non-cotton clothing. When cotton gets wet it does not keep you warm.
    • We recommend using dri-fit shirts or a rashguard.
  • Shorts/pants
    • Dragon boating is a water sport and we usually get wet. Keep that in mind.
    • We recommend either a pair of track pants or board shorts.
  • Shoes
    • As your feet will get wet, we would advise against wearing running shoes and socks in the boat.
    • We recommend wearing sandals or flip-flops, but some members prefer to go barefoot.
  • Extra clothes
    • Bring a change of clothes and keep it in the storage locker, as you will want to change out of your wet clothes.

Other than clothes, what do I normally need to paddle?

You need to bring water and sunscreen! They are probably the two most important things to bring. Being burned or dehydrated ends your fun quickly. You also probably want to bring some granola bars or snacks for some quick food, a towel is another nice thing to have for drying off or changing afterwards.

Should I get my own paddle & lifejacket?

This is completely up to personal preference. The club provides life jackets and paddles, but if you buy your own it will probably be more comfortable and fit you better. Unfortunately, you cannot always use your equipment at races. Most of the local races do not allow you to use your own equipment.

When are practices canceled?

  • Air Temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Air temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and raining (yes snow counts)
  • White Caps: This is a condition of high wind. The coach or the steerer usually makes the call on the dock
  • Lightning: water + electricity = bad. The storms are usually short so most of the time this does not cancel a practice
  • Any other time the coach or steerer think there are unsafe conditions
  • Call 617-517-0727 to check if the practice is canceled.
