Pawtucket, Rhode Island 2008 Race Write-Up
CONGRATULATIONS to the DBCB Pawtucket crew for placing FIRST in A DIVISION!!!
by Megan Niedbala

Dragon Boat Club of Boston faced off against the possible hurricane Hanna and numerous dragon boat teams on Saturday, September 6, 2008 in the 9th Annual Rhode Island Dragon Boat Race.
Our first race of the day was Race No. 3. We started off with a bang! Because the race timers lost power and could not keep track of our time, we had to turn around and head back to the starting line to do it all over again. We "won" our "practice" race and showed the two other teams in our heat that we could win two races back to back. During our second run of the first heat, Marian became overzealous with her flag catching responsibilities and ended up taking a swim with the fishes! Despite this DBCB still managed to pull in first place with a time of 1:39.06
During our second race of the day, we were up against our town rivals, Living Root Dragon Boat. Ashley Wong's brother graciously provided his services as flag catcher yet despite not catching the flag and receiving a 3 second deduction in our time, we still managed to finish first with a time of 1:35.89.
Our final race of the day was for the A Final! After all our hard work and overcoming the earlier obstacles of the day, we still pulled a few surprises in the end. The A Final consisted of DBCB, Boston Fusion, and one of the Living Root teams. It might have been the first time all three Boston teams were in the same A Final at any race. Awesome! With a friendly substitute steersperson, Dana's SO in the engine room, and Anh Dao as our flag catcher, we successfully caught the flag, and WON the A Final with a time of 1:23.11. We received a trophy, and a check in the amount of $1,000 as the first place prize.
Congrats DBCB for a job well done!!!
