What to expect at a race
DBCB has been going to races for years now. This does not mean our races are perfectly organized with military precision. However, we have learned what to expect.
We'll arrive at the race site early, and set up camp. Our camp site is recognizable by our black DBCB flag and the familar faces of your fellow paddlers. We will arrange to have tents for shade and water on hand. However, lunch is up to the participants. At most race venues, there are food vendors located near by.

Camp DBCB at Montreal
Every race is a little different, and we will announce race specific details via email as the date approaches. So, if you're racing with us, please make sure that you're on the DBCB-racepractice mailing list. (Go to the Mailing Lists page for more information)
In general, two day races have time trials on the first day to establish brackets, and the second day is for position in your bracket. The first day is solely for time, but all the races in the second day are much closer. Also in general, you can expect to race at least twice per day. The more races you win, the more likely you will continue to race as the day goes on.
This means that there is a fair amount of down time between races. During this down time, you can hang out with fellow teammates, grab some lunch, explore the venue, etc. We will have a whiteboard at the campsite, which we will post information about what times people need to be assembled. If there's a block of time before the next race and you want to leave the site, just check with your coach and write your cell number phone number on the whiteboard so we can contact you if something comes up.
In general, you should plan to be outside for most of the day and so dress appropriately. Also, plan on getting wet while racing. So, if it's a cool day, you'll want to bring a towel or at least a jacket to stay warm between races. Check the weather the day before and bring whatever you need to be comfortable outside all day.
With this in mind, here is a list of suggestions:
- DBCB t-shirt and/or tank top (Look sporty out there!)
- Towel
- Some dry clothes
- Light jacket or a fleece
- Water bottle
- Flip-flops or sandals
- Sunblock
- folding chair
- Granola bars or other snacks
